Every Female Leader Must Master the Rules Before Leading the Game
Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.
John C. Maxwell
Have you ever looked at someone successful and wondered, “How did she get there?” Perhaps she leads a thriving business in Ghana, heads a department in a hospital in Nigeria, runs a social enterprise in Kenya, or speaks confidently on international stages. From the outside, it is easy to admire the results. What we often do not see are the principles that shaped the person long before the success became visible. One of the biggest lessons I have learned as a researcher, and leadership coach is this: Every endeavour has principles; every principle has a process and every process produces results. Many people want results, but very few take the time to investigate and understand principles, they have desires but have misaligned behaviours. True leadership begins from principles and process
Professor Wangari Maathai of Kenya, the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
When Wangari looked around her communities, she saw problems, many others overlooked. Rural women walked further every year to collect firewood, rivers were drying up and lands becoming less productive. Instead of simply treating the symptoms, she sought to understand the underlying principle: healthy communities depend on healthy ecosystems. Once she understood this, she built a simple but powerful process around it. Women planted trees, communities protected local environments and small actions were repeated consistently over time. What started as a simple idea became the Green Belt Movement, leading to the planting of millions of trees and empowering thousands of women across Kenya. Wangari’s influence did not come from a title; it came from understanding a principle and consistently applying it. Many young women in our community are ambitious, they want to grow their careers, earn more income, start businesses, publish research, lead organisations, or create meaningful social impact. Ambition is wonderful but ambition without principles is like trying to build a house without a foundation. Should you want financial stability, you must understand the principles of stewardship and discipline. If you want influence, you must understand the principles of service and trust. For a successful career, you need to understand the principles of competence, consistency, and excellence. If you want healthy relationships, you must understand the principles of respect, honour, communication, and integrity. Principle and process always precede rewards.
When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable. - Dr. Myles Munroe
Many people are frustrated because they are putting the carts before the horse by chasing opportunities without understanding the principles that govern those opportunities. Let me share something that may challenge what society often teaches us; your value is not determined by your title or position; it is determined by your usefulness. Think about the colleague everyone goes to for solutions, or an auntie who knows how to bring calm when a family crisis arises or a community volunteer who always knows how to organise people and get things done. These people are valuable because of how useful they are. In the workplace, the most valuable people are often not the ones with the fanciest job title, it is the one who consistently solves problems.
In leadership, people follow those who create value, customers return to those who create value in business, trust is given to those who create value in communities. In my signature framework for identity discovery, service is one key pillar, and significance comes from serving others well because usefulness creates influence and influence is the currency of leadership.
Knowing a Principle Is Not the Same as Mastering It
One of the reasons many people remain stuck is that they confuse knowledge with mastery. Many know that networking is important, few consistently build relationships. Many know that learning is important but only few dedicate time every week to growing their skills. Many know that discipline creates success, only a few practise discipline when no one is watching. The difference between average and exceptional people is often implementation not information. Mastery occurs when a principle becomes a habit and eventually becomes part of your identity.
Three Ways to Turn Principles into Process
Knowing principles is important, but applying them is transformative.
1. Translate the Principle into Daily Actions
Ask yourself:
“If I truly believed this principle, what would I do differently today?”
For example, if your principle is continuous learning, your process might be:
Read for 20 minutes daily.
Attend one webinar monthly.
Learn one new skill every quarter.
The simpler the process, the easier it is to sustain.
2. Build Systems Instead of Depending on Motivation
Motivation comes and goes but systems remain.
If your principle is service, create systems that make service a lifestyle:
Mentor one younger woman every month.
Volunteer your expertise quarterly.
Reach out to one person weekly to offer support.
Systems help principles survive difficult seasons.
3. Reflect, Measure, and Improve
Every month, ask yourself:
What progress have I made?
What challenges did I face?
What lessons have I learned?
How have I become more useful to others?
Reflection transforms experience into wisdom and wisdom strengthens leadership.
To every young woman reading this from Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Uganda, Kenya, and beyond: Do not be in a hurry to become influential, be in a hurry to become useful. Focus on becoming skilled and chase mastery. As you understand the principles that govern your purpose, and you faithfully practise those principles daily, leadership becomes a natural outcome. The world desperately needs more people who understand how to solve problems, create value, serve others, and lead with purpose.
